It combines Shimano's 8-speed gearing with seat post suspension to provide an incredibly smooth, quiet and thoroughly enjoyable ride. This recreational hybrid bike is a combination recreation, commuter and comfort bike. Built on a 700C road bike frame, this bike features an adjustable stem for setting just the right handlebar position, slightly wider tires for more versatile riding surfaces, and Shimano's Nexus 8-speed gearing to deliver a smooth, enjoyable, worry-free ride. The Runabout offers a gear range comparable to 21 gears on a 24-gear chain bike. By eliminating all the overlapping and redundant gears of chain-derailleur systems, the Runabout's 8 evenly spaced gearing is low enough for climbing hills, and high enough for cruising at speeds of more than 20 MPH. The Runabout offers you the gear range you need, but in a system that is smoother and simpler to operate. Most of all, with its fully enclosed shaft drive and internal gearing, there is no grease to get on your hands or clothes and no derailleurs or sprockets to tear clothes or cut fingers. The quality and appearance of this bike are outstanding and the ride is very nice. The only reasons I am not awarding five stars are related to the brakes and kickstand. The linear brakes are very decent quality and nicely oversized but are somewhat difficult to adjust properly. I had to give up and take the bike to a shop for final adjustment. I would have been willing to kick in more for disc brakes. The kickstand is OK except the frame mounting bracket will interfere with my left heel if I place my feet at all to far back on the pedal. However, the shaft drive with the super smooth internal hub gears is fabulous. They are great technological features and create a cleaner, simpler appearance, greatly reduce maintenance, and have wonderful ease of operation. I considered a carbon fiber belt drive but wanted to completely eliminate any moving parts exposure. My rating, now that I have things adjusted optimally is actually closer to four and one-half.
